One is a clutch, another engages the pinion, and there MAY be a transmission with two gears, high and low. There are two or three controls near the diesel flywheel housing. Next find and try these controls: Compression release - as said above this is a lever located at the rear of the engine block and has three positions, run, half and off. Make sure there is fuel in the diesel tank. The oil level should be WELL ABOVE the high mark, as oil is normally checked with the engine running. Check the oil in both crankcases, starting engine and diesel. This will keep the machine from slipping into gear at an inopportune time. Engaging the clutch moves some pins into place that precludes moving the shifters. First thing you do is to make sure the transmission is in NEUTRAL and the main clutch is engaged. Familiarize yourself with the controls and starting is an easy job. In all probability you will have trouble engaging the pinion when the starting engine is running unless you engage it before starting the starting engine. For the really knowledgeable people on things like this you might want to look in at ACMOC.ORG they are so good they could start it over the phone for you. ![]() This should get you in the neighbor hood. When shutting down the pony ALWAYS shut the gas tank valve off and let the pony run out of gas. Depending on temp SD vs Fl we would use a sniff of ether, you may not need it to get her going. When things a chugging along increase the compression and let her warm up a bit and pull the throttle open a bit ,not too far, and you should get some smoke. Engage to pinion followed by the clutch on the pony. Place it for the least amount of compression-away from the run position. It will have something like start/ half /run on the quadrant. Before engaging these there is a lever above that releases compression. You will have to look a little to see which is which, chances are there is a linkage on the one for the pinion going to the flywheel area. ![]() Get the pony running, the two handles together near the pony clutch housing are the clutch and the pinion.
